MEXT SCHOLARSHIP HOKKAIDO UNIVERSITY IS ANNOUNCED FOR ENGINEERING, GENERAL, AND UNIVERSITY RECOMMENDATION “STUDY-IN-JAPAN GLOBAL NETWORK SCHOLARSHIP”
MEXT scholarships About:
The application starts with screening and selection for the scholarship. Applicants are expected to be academically excellent and strongly motivated to conduct Master’s or Doctoral level research at one of laboratories at e3 program. The candidates who passed the first screening (document screening and interview with a prospective supervisor) will proceed to the second screening (interview with nomination committee) and be asked to submit additional documents to complete the procedure. In order to be considered for admission to the e3 program, the Graduate School of Engineering, candidates must first be nominated for the scholarship. (Caution: MEXT Scholarship application and admission of the Graduate School of Engineering are separate procedures.)
MEXT Scholarship Conditions of the scholarship:
Monthly allowance
Master’s course: 144,000 JPY
Doctoral course: 145,000 JPY

Possibility to extend the scholarship from Master’s to PHD: recipients of this scholarship can apply for scholarship extension to the Doctoral program. Extensions are granted on competitive basis.
MEXT Scholarship Admission:
Admission with this scholarship is possible only in October, 2024.
Eligibility:
Applicant’s birthday must be on or after April 2nd, 1989.
Applicants must have nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Those who reside in Japan are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
Applicants must have excellent academic record and be proficient in English.

Result announcement of the First Screening: Jan 17th, 2024
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
Second Screening
Interview with shortlisted candidates: Jan 22nd – 26th, 2024 (tentative)
Submission of additional documents: by the end of January, 2024
Final Result announcement: Feb 7th, 2024 (tentative, depending on the scholarship type you are nominated for, the results announcement date may vary)
Caution
This is the only solicitation for MEXT Scholarships (University Recommendation) to international students by the Graduate School of Engineering for 2024 academic year enrollment. This policy applies to the “Global Engineering Leadership Program for Sustainable Development” scholarship program. However, applicants for extra MEXT scholarships (University Recommendation) like “General” and “Study-in-Japan Global Network Scholarship” will be picked from the same pool of submissions.
Special considerations
The e3 program recruits’ candidates for MEXT scholarship from all over the world, due regard being given to the geographic diversity of the scholarship recipients. Candidates from the following regions are urged to apply for this scholarship call: Western Asia.

Japanese government MEXT: University Recommendation “General”
A very limited number of MEXT scholarship positions is allocated to Hokkaido University under the “General” category. Few highly ranked applicants for the MEXT Uniform call can be recommended to the university from the e3 program.

Japanese government MEXT: University recommendation “Study-in-Japan Global Network Scholarship”
Universities which are entrusted from MEXT as a part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project” can offer few scholarship positions for specific target areas. In 2021-22 intakes e3 program nominated a limited number of high ranked applicants from the MEXT: Uniform call to the scholarship allocated to the Sub-Saharan Africa region.
