Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme Introduction:
Established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council, the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programs in Hong Kong’s universities. The Fellowship Scheme will provide a competitive annual stipend and conference and research-related travel allowance per year up to three years. Applications are welcomed to apply for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) 2024 in Hong Kong. All International Students from any part of the globe are eligible to apply for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2023. Students who have done Bachelors degree (16 years of education) can also apply (Direct PhD). Both the MPhil and Bachelor degree holders can apply for Hong Kong PhD scholarship. Fully Funded Fellowship is available in Hong Kong top 8 Universities. There is No Application Fee to apply for the Fellowship.
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Initial application deadline:
1 December 2023 at 12:00 noon Hong Kong Time (GMT + 8 hours).
Degree Program Selection :
Shortlisted applications, subject to their areas of studies, will be reviewed by one of the following two Selection Panels comprising experts in the relevant board areas:
- Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Technology
- Humanities, Social Sciences and Business Studies
Students can apply in following study areas Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Technology, Humanities, Social Science and Business Studies under HKPFS 2024. This fellowship will cover all the expenses to study in Hong Kong best universities. It is the prestigious chance for students from around the world to pursue their PhD degree from abroad.
Selection Criteria:
While candidate’s academic excellence is of primary consideration, the Selection Panels will take into account factors as follows:
- Academic excellence;
- Research ability and potential;
- Communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Leadership abilities.
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship benefits :
The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$331,200 (approximately US$42,460) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) per year for each awardee for a period up to three years. 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2024/25 academic year*. For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities.

How to Apply:
Applicants may choose a maximum of two programs within one or two universities for PhD study.
STEP 1: Submit application to Research Grant Council:
Applications for PhD admission must be submitted to relevant university (ies) directly for the selected program(s). Applicants are obliged to fully comply with the admission requirements of their selected universities and programs. The HKPFS 2024/25 calls for applications from 1 September 2023 to 1 December 2023 (12:00 noon, Hong Kong Time). Details on application procedures will be available at http://www.rgc.edu.hk/hkphd.
STEP 2: Submit Application Directly to Universities

Individual universities will conduct interviews with applicants as part of the assessment for selection. Candidates not selected for the HKPFS award may be accepted by the universities concerned for regular PhD admission and offered postgraduate studentship by universities.
