Project title: Synthesis of biodegradable conjugated polymers.

Supervisors: Assist. Prof. Erica Zeglio (main supervisor); Prof. Ergang Wang (co-supervisor)

The rise in digitalization and the use of short-lived electronic devices has led to a continuous surge in e-waste. Transient technologies aim to address this issue by ensuring that all device components degrade into non-toxic or biologically friendly products after use. However, a significant challenge lies in developing organic semiconductors that possess both mixed ionic/electronic conductivity and form stable thin films when in contact with aqueous electrolytes, essential for applications involving biodegradation.

This project seeks to synthesize novel organic semiconductors using traditional or environmentally friendly synthesis methods. These materials will be immediately integrated into organic bioelectronic devices developed by Zeglio’s group, such as organic electrochemical transistors.

The research will focus on synthesizing new organic semiconductors, assessing their properties, and evaluating their suitability for bioelectronic devices. It will address various research challenges, from employing greener synthesis routes to tailoring properties for specific applications and incorporating chemical functionalities for degradation after the device’s lifecycle.

Aeeking proactive candidates with a problem-solving mindset, preferably with a background in organic and materials chemistry applied to organic bioelectronics. Experience in organic synthesis, organic semiconductors, and organic electronic materials is advantageous. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is essential for applicants.

  • In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
  • In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of chemistry, materials science or a related subject is valid.
